Announcing Mississippi's Inaugural Women's State Championship

Read about the upcoming and first ever Mississippi Women's State Championship.

The first ever Mississippi Women's State Chess Championship will be held at the Nissan Training Center in Canton on September 14, 2024. The winner of the Open section will be Mississippi's first Women State Champion.

This tournament is operated under the regulations of the US Chess Federation and also offers players the chance to obtain or improve a rating. Players must be current US Chess members or either join or rejoin prior to the tournament.

The event is open to all female participants of any age. There are currently 59 female USCF members of any age in Mississippi. We had 36 players participate in our State Girls Championship in February in Flowood. We expect a number of our participants to be scholastic players. However, there are 682 (!) female players who have a rating and a Mississippi address on file with US Chess. So the sky's the limit!

There will be 3 sections: Open, Reserve, and Under 12. The Open section is available to all players who wish to compete for the Women's State Championship. The Reserve section is open to players of any age who have ratings under 600. The Under 12 section is open to rated or unrated players with any rating who are not yet 12 years old as of the tournament start date.

There are 4 rounds and the time control for each player is 45 minutes with a 15 second increment for each completed move.

There are a number of excellent and highly rated hotels and restaurants in the area. The I-55 corridor south of Nissan from Gluckstadt has restaurants, shopping, and movie theatres. Most highly rated nearby hotels are in either Madison or Ridgeland with close access to I-55.

SPECIAL OFFER: For any new USCF member playing in their first tournament we will offer a free entry fee. We will make the same offer to any player rejoining after at least a 3 year absence.

For full tournament details including the links to see registrations and entries see the Mississippi Chess Association website at http://www.mcachess.org.

NOTES:

  • Attendance at the Girls Championship has been quickly increasing, from 10 in 2022, to 23, to 36 in 2024.
  • This is the second new state championship tournament added in 2024. The Senior State Championship was held in April also at the Nissan Training Center.
  • There are two other state championships not held in 2023 which will be held in 2024. The G/60 and team championships will be held in June and July respectively in Flowood.
