New this year - a series of fall K-12 tournaments and several enhancements to the schedule and section options at the individual championship.

Announcing the 2024-2025 Mississippi Chess Association K-12 Schedule

As the name implies, we're going to follow the full school year this year by having both fall and spring tournaments. Our new fall tournaments will be jamboree events intended to give players some practice playing in tournament conditions before we have our championship tournaments January through March.

In sporting terms, jamboree events are celebrations typically held at the beginning of a season. These will be individual K-12 chess tournaments held on a single day with a faster time control than our individual championship. The time control will be 30 minutes with a 15 second increment per move. Our goal is to distribute these events throughout Mississippi. This fall we are having the following events:

  • September 28 @ Jackson Prep in Flowood
  • October 5 @ Franklin Chess Center in Meadville
  • November 16 @ Delta State University in Cleveland

Our spring championship schedule is:

  • January 18-19 -- Individual Championship @ St. Andrews in Ridgeland
  • February 15 -- Girls Championship @ Jackson Prep in Flowood
  • March 29 --Team Championship @ St. Andrews in Ridgeland
The Individual Championship will include some changes this year:
  • We're going to add a K-1 section for our youngest players.
  • The K-1 and K-3 sections will be Saturday-only.
  • We're going to add Reserve sections for players under a specified rating in K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 that will also be Saturday only.

Any K-1 or K-3 player who wishes to play up in the 2-day K-5 Open section to compete for the Rockefeller spot in the National Elementary Championship may elect to do so. Any K-5, 6-8, 9-12 player that wishes to play the 2-day schedule in the Open section and compete for the Rockefeller, Barber or Denker spots may do so regardless of rating.
